PRAY FOR TANZANIA

And he said to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.
Luke 10:2 ESV

Following independence from British rule, Tanganyika and the Zanzibar Archipelago merged to form the United Republic of Tanzania in 1964. The country is a de facto one-party state. The Chama Cha Mapinduzi party and it’s predecessor have ruled Tanzania since independence. The country is seen as one of the most politically stable countries in Africa. The federal capital is in Dodoma. The former capital, Dar es Salaam, retains most government offices and is the country's largest city and leading commercial center. Tanzania has about 150 ethnic groups with over 100 languages spoken. The national language is Swahili. English is also widely spoken. Arabic is spoken in Zanzibar. Christianity is the largest religion, with a large Muslim minority that lives mostly in Zanzibar.

Country Stats

Capital City: Dodoma
Government: Unitary Socialist dominant-party presidential republic
People Groups: 157 people groups (Joshua Project)
Population: 61,741,120
Religion: 63.1% Christianity, 34.1% Islam, 1.5% no religion, 1.3% traditional faiths/others
The Joshua Project has found that 28 of the 157 people groups in Tanzania are unreached, meaning there is no indigenous community of Christians that is able to evangelize the people group without outside assistance. Open Doors reports that Christian communities in Tanzania are experiencing persecution to some degree, but Christians with a Muslim background on Zanzibar are experiencing bullying, harassment and sometimes physical attacks by from Zanzibar authorities and religious leaders.

RiverLakes Church has partnered with the work of International Christian Ministries (ICM) in Africa for over three decades. In 2006, RCC committed to help build and support the Seminary in Tanzania. This Seminary equips Pastors and Ministry Leaders who are already actively involved in ministry but lack formal biblical and theological training. For the last 10 years, the Seminary has been sending students to evangelize and disciple two unreached people groups. RCC is still actively supporting the work that the Lord is doing in Tanzania through our partnership with ICM.

How to Pray

  • Pray for the RCC/ICM partnership in Tanzania to continue to serve the nationals through the Seminary and other Kingdom purposes and plans.
  • Pray for the Lord to use the ongoing outreach to the Maasai and Zaramo people groups to bring many to saving grace in Jesus.
  • Ask the Lord to strengthen and encourage Tanzanian church leaders.
